Fire engineering design

Fire engineering design (fire safety design) is one of the first steps in a building project. The fire engineering design sets out the fire safety solutions for the site. Often a fire engineering design is already required at the building permit stage. The fire engineering plan is produced because it serves as a source of information for the project planners, authorities and other parties involved in the project. Having comprehensive baseline information on fire safety requirements from the outset of a project can reduce project costs and facilitate the work of those involved in the project. Sound design creates a cost-effective fire safe environment within the framework of regulations and codes. Timely fire engineering design prevents both errors and deficiencies during the design and implementation phases.

Good fire engineering design is based on good cooperation with the authorities and smooth collaboration between the client and the designers. Especially in the early stages of a project, cooperation with the principal designer is of paramount importance.

Fire engineering design is governed by laws and regulations, as well as various guidelines. The design determines that the essential technical requirements for fire safety are met. The design can be based on the tabular values set out in the Fire Safety Regulation or on a functionally assumed fire development.

Functional fire engineering design is usually based on the definition of initial data, risk analysis and simulations to be carried out. Functional design is roughly divided into three work phases. At the beginning of the functional design, the baseline documents are prepared and approved by the regulatory authority. Once the baseline is approved, the necessary simulations are carried out on the site. The results of the simulations are recorded in a separate final report, which is presented to the supervisory authority.

With a fire safety design based on the assumed fire development, the final result must be at least as safe as the safety level of the building designed with the table values of the Regulation.

For the functional design we use modern software based on FDS modelling. Functional design can be used to investigate, among other things, the safety of escape, the functioning of smoke extraction and the fire resistance of structures.

Our designers are qualified as fire safety designers to the FISE Demanding level.

Our fire engineering services include, but are not limited to, the following:

-Fire engineering design and consultancy.

-Smoke extraction design

-Fire barrier design

-Extinguishing design

-Explosion protection documentation and classification of premises (Ex premises)

-Expert reports

-Extinguishing safety reports

-Evacuation plans

-Worksite inspections and surveys

-Third party inspections

Please remember that we also do sprinkler design, HVAC design and HVAC supervision at Paloff. Our extensive network of experts ensures that the site is carried out in a fire-safe manner, taking into account the requirements of regulations and codes.

Alternatively, we can carry out only a specific aspect according to your needs. In the field of fire engineering, we use all the resources at our disposal, including those of other design disciplines and contracting, in a holistic manner.

We also offer sprinkler contracting, maintenance, servicing and fire protection contracting. We offer a full range of services to meet the challenges of fire safety, from design through to contracting, maintenance and servicing.

When planning fire safety systems, it’s wise to design fire barrier at the same time — that way, everything will be done right from the start. If fire barrier is designed and installed too late in the process, installing the correct solutions may lead to costly modifications. Learn more about fire barrier design.
